Catalina Gris
Catalina Gris is a professional artist and teacher who primarily works with in técnica mixta (mixed media). She studied art at the prestigious National School of the Arts “La Esmeralda” and earned her MFA degree at the University of Guanajuato. In 2022 she was awarded the Artistas con trayectoria grant for painting by PECDA Guanajuato.
Her images reference the urban landscape, visual perception, and ancient Mexican mythology in a well-modulated abstract substrate. To construct each artwork, she uses fabrics not typically found in paintings. This allows her to explore different textures and paint applications from transparency to impasto. She aims to transform these images and materials to abstract pictorial objects that remind the viewer of their everyday surroundings while hinting at its ecological tragedies.
She is currently a member of the SNCA’s National Art Creators System. She splits her time between Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende.
