Description

In the 1930s, the artist Joan Miró declared an “assassination of painting.” Instead of using conventional painting methods, he would put together visual elements in a way that didn’t support the established society and the bourgeois.

In this session we’ll draw inspiration from Joans Miro’s lithographs to make an original painting with an anti-conventional aura.

With the help of stencils created to mirror Miro’s basic shapes we’ll put together an original composition. Sometimes poetic, sometimes whimsical, always a siege on the senses. The result of this session will be a small painting that expresses your fight, your journey.

About Catalina Gris

Catalina Gris is a professional artist and teacher who primarily works with mixed media. She studied art at the prestigious National School of the Arts “La Esmeralda” and earned her MFA degree at the University of Guanajuato. In 2022 she was awarded the Artistas con trayectoria grant for painting by PECDA Guanajuato.

Her images reference the urban landscape, visual perception, and ancient Mexican mythology in a well-modulated abstract substrate. To construct each artwork, she uses fabrics not typically found in paintings. This allows her to explore different textures and paint applications from transparency to impasto. She aims to transform these images and materials to abstract pictorial objects that remind the viewer of their everyday surroundings while hinting at its ecological tragedies.

She is currently a member of the SNCA’s National Art Creators System. She splits her time between Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende.
